In November I'm hoping to paint the downstairs of our house. I've been looking and thinking about colors for way too long. After changing my mind at least three times, I think I've come up with a basic idea. But I'm open for suggestions.
Please, I need them. What do you think?
I'm envisioning three walls of our living room and an accent wall in our kitchen this blue color. (Anybody know what color this is? I came across this picture and love it, but I have no clue what the paint color is.)

Then the rest of the downstairs would be painted a neutral taupe color.

Maybe Behr Castlepath

Or Sherwin Williams Amazing Grey
(It doesn't look too grey though, does it? Matt and I disagree on what classifies as grey. I suppose the name does explain it all, though...)
The rooms which we'll be painting are pictured below.

We don't want the neutral paint color to be too dark, since the kitchen is pretty dark already. But I don't want it too light, either. (This post is beginning to remind me of
The Three Little Bears book I read to Skylie. Not too dark, not too light...just right.)

Here's the foyer and living room. The floral couches have been replaced with the ones you see below. I got found them on Craigslist. The couches, not the people.)

Oh, and we've also got a powder room by the foyer that I'm think of painting either a darker taupe or darker blue (in the same hue as the colors in the rest of the house.)

I haven't nailed down what color scheme I want for the accessories--probably lots of neutrals with a few splashes of color here and there. At this moment I'm loving the blue and red room shown above, or maybe a less-crazy combination of the blue, red, green, and orange in this rug.

And that's it. What do you think? What paint colors and brands do you love? I am all ears.
P.S. Happy Halloween. Tonight Matt suggested we go with an orange and black scheme in honor of the holiday. Nice.

We're still in the midst of painting every room in our house, so I feel your dilemma. Here are my suggestions: Visit Home Depot & Lowe's and any other paint store you love, and load up on paint chips. Take them home, and mix and match until you narrow down what you love. Tape them to the walls, and look at them for a few days. Look at them in the day, in sunshine, at night, with direct light & without. I really do like the Martha Stewart colors from Home Depot. They are not comprehensive, but I have been super happy with what we've used so far. Also, remember the colors will be slightly darker on your walls.
Once you figure out your color scheme, I HIGHLY recommend the Behr Premium Plus Ultra. I know it's more money, but it is AWESOME. Cheap paint will apply - and look- like cheap paint. Not this stuff. It will give you one-coat coverage. I am also a big fan of a Satin finish. It's a nice compromise between the cleanability of semi-gloss, and the clean look of a flat paint. You don't need an extra layer of primer as your walls are ready to go.
Finally: teach yourself to cut in without having to tape. It takes a little practice, and you need to go slow, but I personally have had huge problems with taping. Sherwin-Williams makes an AMAZING trim brush that sells for $5. I also have a 1" craft brush that I use for really tight spots & mistakes. If you do tape, cut it with a razor blade before removing from the wall/ ceiling.
Young House Love has some great painting advice & a video on cutting in trim. Have fun! And in the end, it's just paint. You can always cover it up or change it later.
Ahhhh paint. I LOVE picking out paint colors. I don't know if you remember, but I don't have a single white wall in my house. That being said, I don't think any of my rooms scream... well, except the basement, but we didn't paint that. Every wall was a different color when we moved it. We just decided to embrace it. ;-)
I am all about finding neutrals that you like because then you can accent with any color you want! I was definately go with a lighter color in the kitchen and then if you want some brighter pops of color you can add accessories. I do like your blue color. It seems very calming. A nice red is always my favorite accent color.
This is our second house we have turn from white into color and we always tape. Nick prefers "frog tape". He says it works the best. We also eventually invested in a Wagner paint roller and it's totally made all the different not having to bend over. We think it was worth every penny. :-)
Have fun! I'm so excited to see what you come up with! You have a blank canvas that you now get to make your own. How fun!
Whatever you choose will be beautiful. I feel your pain. I completely painted our front room in Iowa 5 times before I got the color I liked. It was a huge waste of money that we didn't have to spare. Personally, I love the Purdy brushes for cutting in the trim. I invested in a few several years ago and and have found them to be well worth the extra pennies.
I don't have any idea what kind of roller Chrissy is talking about, but I am intrigued! If I ever paint again I will investigate Wagner paint rollers.
Good luck!
