I'm seeking advice. What should I get Skylie for Christmas? She's two. Our Christmas will be modest by scope, but I want to get her one great present that she'll love.
Some friends have told me some great ideas for deciding how many gifts they give their kids, and I thought the ideas were too good not to share. One friend gives three gifts to each child (not including what grandparents and others might give), representing the three gifts the wise men brought.
Another friend does the same thing, but she classifies the toys in three categories: 1) a fun toy, 2) a gospel-centered gift, and 3) an educational gift.
I'm thinking I'll try this approach this year. Sky will get a puzzle (They're educational, right?) and the Scripture Stories DVDs. But what great toy should I get my little one?
P.S. I haven't forgotten Kaitlyn. But her gifts will be a bit, uh, easier to scrounge up. :)

I don't know exactly what you should get her, because I don't know what toys she already has, but I know we are probably going to look at Once Upon a Child for something sweet and fun for our girls for Christmas.
I know it's big but I suggest a play kitchen. Sometimes you can find great deals near Christmas. It's probably to late to find one on Craigslist. It will last for all your kids too. We usually only buy three gifts as well. By the time all the other gifts come in I find that they always end up with a much bigger Christmas than I planned on. As far as other girl toys go, I don't think I would be much help. Good luck!
I don't think it has to be a "toy". If she loves books, get her a set of books you know would be great for her. If she loves animals, get her a stuffed dog or cat she can take care of... or a pillow pet, or something like it. Does she like to play dress-up? Princess outfits are still popular at our house. And if nothing else comes to mind, enjoy the fact that you can still have a low key Christmas, because each year the "I Wants" grow increasingly deafening.
My formula is: Something to Read, Something to Wear, Something to Play with... and if it's a really good year, Something they want and don't think they're going to get. :-)
I had a hard time deciding what to get Elyssa at TWO because I didn't really want to push the "princess bit" on her, and she was never all that excited about baby dolls. That may have been the year of the Melissa and Doug Cutting Fruit and the Green Toys Tea Party Set.
Green Toys makes all their stuff from recycled milk jugs and I LOVE IT. It's cute but really really sturdy so it will hold up to the beating of all your children over time. I call that an heirloom toy. I'm pretty sure I found it at Barnes and Noble, but it may have been at ToysRus.
The Melissa and Doug Cutting Fruit or Vegetables seem to be a favorite toy at our house of all our guests... including the adults, and it's always fun to get stuff for you kids that you want to play with them too, right? I would also consider it an heirloom toy, and it can usually be found anywhere that Melissa and Doug toys are sold. I think we found it at ToysRus, but I've seen it online at Target too.
I hope this helps!

I second Kelly's idea of a play kitchen. We got Teairsa one this summer that we found at a great price at a yard sale and it has been played with almost everyday since. Even Tennyson is playing with it most mornings now too :)
I like the puzzle idea you are going with, those are always fun and I think they are educational also.
